GIP FAQs

Can both First and Second Year Students participate in the GIP?

Yes, the GIP (MGMT656) will be open to both first and second year students.

Can I take the GIP for a grade?

No, the GIP is offered on a Pass/Fail basis only. For this reason, the GIP does not count toward the one credit unit limit you have available for Pass/Fail courses each semester.

Is it possible to participate in a GIP if I am in the SFS or HKS programs?

To participate in a GIP, you will need to be located in Philadelphia. Lectures take place weekly, which require mandatory attendance in order to complete the program.

What are the requirements to lead a GIP as a Student Coordinator?

Some of the essential requirements of student coordinators include excellent organizational, interpersonal and communications skills, conversational proficiency in the language of the host country is preferred and in-depth familiarity with the business, culture, society and geography of the host country is required. Please contact Amy Miller, Director, at amymill@wharton.upenn.edu if you have any questions.

Is financing available for the GIP?

Student loans are possible only if the GIP is required for graduation. That is, if you are a second year student and you will have earned 19cu prior to completing the GIP, then you are not eligible for a student loan. If you plan to apply for a loan, it is important that you submit your loan application early as it will take approximately 4-6 weeks before funds will be disbursed to your student account. Please note: You can only apply for a loan after you have been confirmed as a participant on the GIP.

Another option is the Wharton Student Experience Fund (WSEF). This program seeks to break down financial barriers for current MBA students to access high-impact experiential programs at Wharton. The goal is to provide need-based funding for over 100 students per class.  Recipients can leverage funding towards eligible program/participation fees as well as the associated expenses including flight, gear, and personal expenses set by each program. Students are able to utilize funds from the WSEF for GIPs. You can find more information here.

Will the GIP conflict with recruiting efforts for my internship?

Although we aim to minimize this conflict, this will depend entirely on your individual recruiting efforts and decision to take on an internship. Please keep in mind that attendance is required throughout the entire program in order to receive a passing grade. We recommend that you speak with your advisor to understand the various options available to you.
